The Orton-Gillingham Approach
Orton-Gillingham (OG) is a direct, explicit, structured, multi-sensory, scientifically-based approach for teaching reading, spelling, and writing. The OG Approach follows twelve principles. All lessons are individualized and based on student performance from informal testing measures and previous lessons. Students must demonstrate “mastery” before moving onto the next skill. It is important that lessons allow for each student to experience success as it leads to the development of self-confidence.
OG is recognized as the world-class approach for teaching students reading, spelling, and writing. This approach should be in every general education and special education classroom EVERYWHERE!
